Artist's Statement

I’m not really interested in painting what I can see (i.e. landscapes, still lifes or portraits) because I wouldn’t be able to do them justice anyway. Well maybe I could if I worked at it but those sorts of subjects don’t really inspire me. If I can see something I might as well take a photo of it. I paint more from my imagination, sometimes using photos as reference material. So I guess I would say my style is expressive as it comes from within. I love unrealistic colour and form.

I am influenced by early 20th century painters such as André Derain and the Fauves “The Wild Beasts” (a group of mainly French painters), German expressionist Franz Marc, Dutch postimpressionist Vincent Van Gogh and the early work of Russian abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky (Franz and Wassily were both members of the Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) movement, a German expressionist group).
